The Crow Hill Co. has introduced VAULTS – Acid Synth, the latest addition to its growing lineup of free virtual instruments. This plugin is a tribute to the legendary Roland TB-303 Bass Line, the synthesizer that played a pivotal role in shaping Acid House and electronic dance music.
A Synth That Defined a Genre
Originally released in 1981, the Roland TB-303 was intended to mimic an electric bass guitar, offering an affordable rhythm section when paired with the TR-606 Drumatix drum machine. However, its attempt to replicate a bass guitar fell short, leading to its commercial failure and discontinuation.
Despite its early demise, the TB-303 found a new life in the hands of DJ Pierre and Phuture, who discovered its unique sonic capabilities by manipulating the filter and resonance knobs. Their experimentation led to the birth of Acid House, a genre that shaped underground electronic music and fueled the warehouse rave scene of the late 1980s.
Bringing the Acid Sound to Modern Production
VAULTS – Acid Synth captures the essence of the TB-303’s iconic sound, offering intuitive controls to create the signature squelchy, resonant acid basslines. The interface is designed for newcomers and experienced producers, allowing users to craft authentic acid sounds easily.
Features
Cutoff Control – 24dB lowpass filter for adjusting high frequencies, automatically mapped to MIDI CC1.
Resonance – Enhances the filter’s peak to achieve the signature acid squelch.
Modulation (MOD) – Controls voltage sent to the filter, creating dynamic sound variations.
Decay – Adjusts the envelope decay time for shaping notes.
Effects – Includes Echo for delay and Splosh, an algorithmic reverb simulating a cavernous space.
Glide Effect – When playing legato, overlapping MIDI notes create a natural glide between pitches, replicating the behavior of the original TB-303.

Sound Dust has introduced Terrible Wurlitzer, a free instrument derived from the Wurlitzer Toolkit. This unique Kontakt library captures the character of a Wurlitzer electric piano processed through an MPC 1000 pitch-shifting algorithm, resulting in a distorted yet expressive sound.
Distinctive Lo-Fi Character
Terrible Wurlitzer is created by pitch-shifting a Wurlitzer piano up one octave using the MPC 1000’s live pitch-shifting feature. This technique adds a rough, degraded texture, making it an unconventional yet inspiring tool for producers seeking unique tones.
The instrument is based on Bad Wurlitzer, one of the four sounds from the full Wurlitzer Toolkit, which was recorded with downward pitch-shifting. In contrast, Terrible Wurlitzer shifts every note upwards, producing a raw, edgy sound that blends both unpleasant and beautiful qualities.
Features
Three velocity layers for dynamic expression
Single tremolo engine
No snapshots or rewiring required
System Requirements
Terrible Wurlitzer requires the full version of Kontakt 6.7.1 or later and is not compatible with Kontakt Player.
Free Download
Terrible Wurlitzer is available as a free download. Visit Sound Dust’s website to explore this unconventional Wurlitzer-based instrument.
Production Expert and Klevgrand are offering the Richter Tectonic Compressor as a free download for a limited time. Normally priced at $70, this exclusive offer allows users to claim the plugin at no cost.
Heavy Compression with Minimal Artifacts
Richter is a tectonic compressor designed to apply heavy compression while minimizing distortion and artifacts. Traditional compressors often introduce unwanted “zipper noise” due to how their envelope followers process transients. Richter takes a different approach, providing smooth, high-quality compression that retains clarity.
Ideal for powerful mixes, punchy drums, and transparent vocals, Richter’s algorithm allows extreme dynamic control without sacrificing sonic integrity.
Intuitive Control and Features
Richter simplifies compression with just two key parameters:
Amount – Adjusts the intensity of compression applied to the signal.
Transient Response – Controls how the compressor reacts to quick transients versus sustained sounds.
Additional features include:
Real-time graph visualization for precise adjustments
Tonal control for shaping the sound
Three-step boost switch for added gain flexibility
Input trim control to manage signal levels
Makeup gain, dry/wet mix, and output control for fine-tuning
System Requirements
Richter is available in AAX, AU, and VST formats for both Windows and Mac:
Mac: macOS 10.10 or later (optimized for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs)
Windows: Windows 7 (SP1) or later, 64-bit host required
